SHOCKS / STRUT CARTRIDGE RECOMMENDATION 200

1980 Volvo 245
Need to replace shocks and struts. Daily driver occasionally load few hundred pounds in the back of the wagon.
Any recent experience with KYB or Monroe brands would be appreciated - I know Bilstein is available but $$.

Thanks very much

Take a look at Rockauto since there's a few choices at a reasonable price. I prefer the Sachs which are factory o.e. . I made the mistake of installing KYB Excel-G shocks and struts but regret it because of rougher ride than the Sachs/Boge o.e. shocks & struts. KYB had a terrific rebate and I was drawn into that dilemma. -Duck

I second the Sachs recommendation. They are as close to the factory installed Boge's as you'll find (Sachs bought Boge). Never installed them in my 240 but when my 95 850 needed new strut mounts, I decided to replace the struts at the same time as they were both original and approaching 200k. Used the Sachs - No problems. Factory handling, ride and not too firm.

Have look at some videos on how they work - mono tube or twin tube? or does it really matter?

        Thanks

Can’t answer your question. On a car as old as yours I don’t think it matters. If old, also consider replacing the strut mounts when doing the struts. They make a big difference.

Check out the link below. I’ve used FCP Euro a lot. Call them with questions. IPD USA is also a good resource for questions as they specialize in Volvos.

            Rethought 240 strut mount 200

Forgot about the cheap, aftermarket strut mounts for 240's. Like Meyle... Only replace them if yours are bad and you can find a high quality strut mount. OE Boge is no longer available. Unless you can find similar quality don't waste your money. You could try Tasca Volvo in RI to see if they still sell 240 parts. At one time they were reasonably priced.

Bilsteins are for high performance cars. I've used low pressure gas shocks on my '81 242 DL and they give a good ride and dampening even with a full load of people and luggage. I've read here that KYB's are not so high quality. Monroe's are good quality and last a long time.

You may want to consider adding air bags to maintain ride height and firmness for heavy loads. You can adjust the air pressure as needed and let air out for no load everyday driving.

A second suggestion is a stronger rear sway bar such as from IPD for stability and safe handling with heavy loads.

All three, shocks, airbags, and sway bar can be done at one time. The air bags go inside the rear springs and require disconnecting the shocks anyway to lower the axle enough to remove the springs which are held in by one bolt at the top and bottom. Be careful not to stress the rear rubber brake lines. By the way, just think, those rubber hoses are over 40 years old!
