The switch on my 444 is not working. No current will go through it. Is it possible for an ordinary fixer-upper like me to take the switch apart and fix it? It has to be very simple - off when button depressed and on when door opens and spring inside moves to connect the contacts. I could easily adapt a switch from hardware store but I want to keep the original look if possible.

A good soak in switch cleaner along with a lot of pushing and clicking may cure it. It completes the circuit to earth. Not uncommon for the switch to not be actually making good contact with the body. Dirt and paint can be good insulators. Pop it out and check. Touch the the wire to bare metal to check if the light works.
