Power Steering & AC Removal 200

1980 GT, PS, AC, M46, Non-Turbo:

Want to remove AC compressor and retain power steering. Does anyone make a bracket to do this?
Or, to adapt the later-style pump to my car?

Thanks for your advice.

If yours is the later style and doesn't have a bolt-on P/S pulley, but rather a press-on P/S pulley then you need this kit

Surprisingly, both are still available. Subtract off the price of the belt to get a better idea of what you're paying for the parts. If you search around hard enough, some people came up with homegrown versions of the later bypass kit.

Having said all that, as long as the A/C compressor clutch turns freely and the A/C is not activated then keeping the A/C belt and driving only the A/C pulley and outer clutch places minimal extra load on the engine during running to affect overall fuel mileage. During acceleration there is a little extra load for the momentum needed to get the clutch and pulley up to speed, but nowhere near as much as if the compressor was engaged.

Mine is the bolt-on pulley. My goal is to remove the unwanted weight of the A/C compressor.
Seems the PS unit bolts to the A/C, and the A/C bolts to the engine block.
So, that is the problem; how to remove A/C, and keep the power steering.

You're right, in your case the P/S pump is mounted on the A/C compressor. The smaller IPD kit only deletes the belt on the A/C pulley. I'd have to look at it again to see if the more expensive A/C delete kit works for your case, I think it might.

An easier way is to source the P/S mounting bracket assembly from a similar or earlier year 240 model without A/C, such as a DL model, then you could mount the P/S where the A/C compressor now is. If you're in a warmer climate area where more people had A/C as an option then you may need to look further afield to find a donor car in a yard.

If you're trying to save weight as well as save a little load on the engine then I'm not sure if it's worth the effort other than for looks. If you drove around with an average of a few gallons less in the tank you would achieve the same gas mileage savings. You could also re-consider reducing the amount of unneeded and rarely needed stuff you carry around in the trunk, like tools and spare parts, also put yourself and all potential passengers on a diet to lose weight. I know for me, having had a 240 without a working A/C, every time you look under the hood you're reminded that a featuire of the car is no longer working and it's not worth fixing, which is an afront to most DIYrs proud of their bricks.

Good idea to just get a non-AC power steering unit from a pre-'85 donor car.
Wonder if the IPD bracket kit (#139672) would work, if I just use a later press-on pulley pump;... would the crank, water pump, an PS pulleys align properly?
