Door Speakers - 700 Replacement sizes? 700 1990

Hiya, folks.

Going well enough on my skunky 1990 740GL that I'm driving it more than half the time for my short commute to work. The 2 blown out door speakers (one front one rear) are starting to drive me crazy and I saw a good deal on some 5.25 inch speakers that I bought some .... and they don't fit. Like they're both too small for the opening but the actual cones are the same size.

I measured the new speakers using their templates and saw immediately that the surrounds are too small for the opening but they're not quite 6 inches.

The FAQ says the mounting depth needs to be less than 2 inches, but I measured mine at 2.5" deep - this can also depend on the magnet diameter though.

Anyway, does anyone have a good guide on exactly what fits without pointing to a website that thinks these cars have 4 inch dash speakers, no door speakers at all, and lists the round door speaker size for the rear deck (which takes oval speakers)

Cheers
Will

Word of caution, avoid using a pop riveter to fasten the speakers, especially old speakers. Can easily tear the diaphragm. No need to ask how I know that.

No actual metric size in mm's? all posts discuss inches. The speakers are made in Sweden by Dynaudio and have a weird four point offset pattern got the speaker hole rivet. May use the slips and screws.

Trying to find the actual metric size. You may need to mod the holes somehow. So that the corner pincushion hole align with the metal slips so you can secure the speaker to the door panel and seal the speaker to the inner door card for best resonance.

    I guess crutchfield is wrong?

Yes, Crutchfield is all kinds of wrong and has many different models confused together.

Even though 744s have cutouts in the metal for rear deck speakers, I don't know that any ever came stock. Maybe it's gotten info from a 940 with component speakers that had 4 inch dash speakers, but it seems very wrong.

After taking a bunch of measurements and looking at speaker diagrams, I think that 6.5 inch speakers are the way to go. They are 6.5 inch in name but no part of them except maybe the grills are 6.5 inches. The hole in the door is about 5.75 inches, and the "cutout" dimension on these speakers I ordered is 5.7. I found a turbobricks post where someone found some jvcs that fit perfectly except about 2mm of metal surround on the speaker. They just cut it off so that the original grills would fit. I believe that's essential since the grills keep the door panel secured in place and resist vibration.

I'll let you all know which fit. Maybe I can write a FAQ section for it.

You may have seen John Sargent's contributed notes for the FAQ on dealing with speaker grill mounting that you may find interesting, plus there's other notes above and below that.

There's an additional radio topic area of the FAQ as a descriptive feature article on stereo installation

If you search around with google there are a number of Volvo forums where people discuss speaker fitment issues, including that one you found on t-bricks. Click on the following refined general search to see them

As for Crutchfield listing inaccuracies for suitable speakers, my understanding is that some of those may be speakers that people successfully managed to install using adapters or modifications to the mounting area. I recall that if you read the fine print that none are listed as direct fitment. Last I determined there are no commonly avilable speakers that are plug and play for door mounting other than used. 240 front door speakers are even worse to replace with even less clearance to the glass.
