Gluing up a flathood grill that's all brittle? 200 1978

The original grill on our 242GT could be smashed by a large Texas bug at speed. I found a gentleman on Turbobricks who will sell me some spare fins and the GT bezels.

Has anyone managed to glue in new fins?

Gluing up a flathood grill that's all brittle? 200 1978

Hi Reno,

I just tripped over this while looking for something else.

https://www.swedishcarparts.com/models/22-volvo-240-260-1975-1982-and-1980-1993/parts/grilles

If you're flush or just hit the lottery, you're all set.

I tried an Auxito red 1157 brake light and it works great in my 940 without
having any issues with the bulb out sensor. Also installed an Auxito white
1156 that makes a superior backup light. These lights both have beefy heat sinks to allow them to run more power.
Anything new in the LED headlight department?
They keep getting better every year, with more luminous flux for the same power.

Happy holidays, Bill

As luck would have it, I bought out a guy in Austin who's selling his Volvo specialty dealership. In with a boatload of unsorted IPD parts, MAFs, hoses, etc, were two good aero hood grills. But still no flat hood grill in sight.

The Auxitos are OK for headlights. I do already run them in other positions. Given a choice, I'd use Beamtech headlights but just from familiarity and none failed yet in 4 years.

That bulb out dash light we just consider to be a visual indicator that the parking light or headlights are on. lol

My girlfriend tore her grill off her Lexus with my garage door opener a few months ago. I used ABS pipe cement and fiberglass window screen to rebuild the mounting posts. I was able to add quite a lot of material.

I also did it on my mom's Jeep when she smashed the plastic fender trim/flare.
I've done it to all sorts of things made of ABS plastic, which is basically any black plastic in any application.

All that is a long way of saying ABS pipe cement works. It contains MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) and will partly dissolve your existing grill in order to form a bond. The liquid also contains ABS plastic particles that will solidify into a glossy skin before drying.

You could use this to patch it, but you need to practice if you want it to turn out pretty.

Good luck!

Hi,

About all I can say for this project is to use an ABS solvent type cement.
You will still have seams of every joint showing either because the cement will be of a color and sunlight will affect its strength over time.
So definitely plan on using an overcoat to protect the materials.

I know this from owning a Ford F-100 and the grill in it became brittle.
Luckily I have not cracked the grill of my 1978 GT.

When you talk of Bezels are meaning where the fog lamps go or the badge emblem.

Phil

I've used eclectic products E6000. Yet clean and even rough up, and clean (alcohol) the surfaces you'll glue together.

The adhesive is UV resilient and tolerant of cold.

Yet far better structural adhesive sealants with superior all weather and UV resistances is available. Some research!

I miss meh original kittysgrey 1979 GT volvo 240 the GT dash cluster. M46 is better. M90L rewls!

Depending on colour matching you might be able to give it a coat of Plasti Dip to give it some strength.
