Timing belt tensioner assembly

How do I pin the spring on the tensioner so I don't loose the spring in a low earth orbit.

I spent $15 for a new spring after launching the old one to God knows where!
Thanks
Dan

I use my giant size water pump pliers - It's tricky business -- I insert a nail or rivet. Protect your eyes in any case. - Dave

That's how I lost the first one, maybe my pliers aren't big enough? I don't want to loose this one, I'm 120 miles from home.
      Thanks

For removal and release, do it with the belt still mounted so if you lose your grip on the shaft then the roller and spring can't fly off, also the roller won't turn if you want to try getting a grip over the whole thing. I variously use jumbo slip-joint pliers if I can keep an appropriate grip with the jaws semi-parallel. I've also used a carpenter's F-clamp with plastic padded jaws over the belted roller or a large C-clamp (6"), which is a little more fiddly to keep on. To release and put the new one on then I generally do the retraction in a bench vise rather than on the car. You can also try folding a loose belt over the roller and held pinched back on the shaft to keep it from flying apart -careful of fingers or having it aimed at anything important.

Thanks Dave, that was my first mistake, I'm lucky it didn't hit me in the head or eye. I was pleasantly surprised that a Volvo dealer would be able to quickly get this item.
It saved me another 200 mile plus round trip home and hours of digging through my junk.
