Fan clutch 1800 1971

I think the fan clutch may be going south. At 2500 rpm something in there starts to rattle badly and the noise increases as rpm rise. Sounds like a handful of gravel inside an empty tin can. Real nasty sounding. This isn’t engine noise. It’s something that’s powered by the belt. Fan clutch or alternator?
How can I test the clutch?

if you dont find it in the fan look under the timing cover. the fiber gear that drives the camshaft can break loose from its metal center, and then the timing gear rattles around hitting the aluminum cover. It happened to me once and that makes a horrible sound. Mine stayed intact enough to keep running and I was able to get home, but would have failed completely very soon.

Try the old "Heater hose stethoscope" - take about a 4' piece of heater hose, put one end to your ear and the other end near the item that you think is making the noise - works pretty good.

DON'T put the hose in the fan!!!

Removed the belt. Started engine. Noise gone. There is indeed some lateral play in the clutch bearing which would allow it to chatter.
If it were the alternator, I don’t believe it would only become evident at higher engine speeds.
    Thanks.

Sometimes a fan clutch bearing noise can be accompanied with play.

With the engine off, see if you can make the fan move to and from the engine.
