D jet F. I. Problem 1800

The D jet on the ‘71 1800E is allowing the engine speed to suddenly fall to 700-800 when accelerator is released, etc. It then pops up to the correct idle at 900-1000. I know this is a common problem but I can’t get that out of it and it’s annoying as all get out, particularly when shifting gears. I’ve set and reset the associated sensors and no dice.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the suggestions. After much investigation I decided to try closing the throttle almost entirely before readjusting the TPS. Instead of measuring the gap at the throttle stop, or opening the throttle the prescribed 3/4 of a turn of the set screw, I only turned the screw enough to barely open the butterfly. Problem solved. No more drop in engine speed and much smoother transition to idle. Idle adjust screw works as it should. Thanks again.

If the vacuum retard is still connected, disabling it might help.

i would scope the throttle switch and see if there is not a dead spot at idle.

Do the key on engine off throttle position switch test.

The injectors should NOT click when returning to the idle position.

There is a switch in the middle of the TPS that controls this.

        Correction:

There should be a single back click, but only when the throttle is returned to fully closed position of the throttle lever.

The back click should be heard when the throttle position switch is being checked and should be heard just as the throttle flap is closed.

When checking/setting the TPS, you should rock the throttle lever slightly open and then release and hear a single click just as you open the throttle and a single back click when releasing the throttle lever.
