Subject: Roof rack for 940 wagon
Message: What happened to the old clip on the rain gutters ski racks
that will also carry lumber, pipe, 32' extension ladders, plywood, etc.
Any suggestions for something that works for occasional use.

Dunno if this will post or not?

Happy motoring, Bill

Posting weirdness & roofrack suggestions for 940 wagon wanted 900 1993

HI Bill. Yeah, I can't have a car I can't throw stuff on top of. I never thought I'd have a car with rain gutters again, and was excited about that when I got my 945. I already had a set of Thule square load bars from when I had my V50, but the feet were the type that wrapped around the raised rails on that car. Also worked on my wife's BMW wagon. Anyway, I found a set of the gutter mount feet on Craigslist for $20 or so. I use them all the time for camping, mountain biking, or carrying lumber. I've seen pics of a few Volvo wagons where the owner has three load bars--good if the loads are extra heavy. Here's my present setup, followed by some shenanigans:

I, for whatever reason, abused my wife's car more than my own. Oh yeah, It was that brief dark time of my life when I was between wagons:

And just for fun, the time I picked up my kids from school, and on the way home stopped to pick up a curbside grocery order; 7 bags. No big deal. Except I was on my bike.

Interestingly, regardless of where I position them, even with my big Thule top box, the old style square bars are quieter on the 940 than the OEM Volvo by Thule aero bars on my wife's V60. I never tried square bars on that car. I should say, rather, that they are quieter over 70mph--that's where the aero bars start to let you know they're up there. In fact, I'm pretty convinced the Thule square bars are even quieter than the OG Volvo screw on luggage rack that came on my car originally. Not that it matters going across town from the lumberyard, but driving to the American Midwest, camping along the way, it matters. Regrettably, I had to remove it to allow the Thule bars to fit.

All that to say: check the classifieds. I've only ever used Thule stuff, and have never had a problem, even pushing the limits.

Dear B.B.,

Hope you're well and stay so. The item you seek: Volvo #3524961. Two cross-roof bars clamp to the rain gutters. This item is NLA from Volvo.

A standard roof-rack - affixed to the roof itself - will bear a lot of weight. I have had six sheets of 3/4" (20 mm)-thick plywood on my roof rack - for a short haul (under 10 miles / 15 Km) with no problems. The total weight was about 400 lbs (180 Kg).

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
