Volvo 240 timing gear would not come off 200 1985

Hello everyone,

I'm facing a challenging task and would appreciate any tips or recommendations you can provide. I'm trying to replace the front crankshaft seal, but the timing gear won't come off. There is a bearing tool available, but it doesn't fit due to the very tight space.

Best,Habib

You might try sending a email to IPD, info@ipdusa.com. They are very good about giving technical advice. Be sure to provide complete information about your vehicle such as year, model, engine, engine accessories such as A/C. Describe what it is you are trying to do and why. They may suggest a specific tool or an improvised method and if such things such as removing the radiator are necessary.

      Hello,

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I've been doing business with IPD for thirty years, and I know the team well. I wrapped the area with flame-retardant material, carefully applied high temperature heat, and managed to remove it. Rust buildup was causing it to seize.

      Best regards,
      Habib

Consider replacing the balancer if it is the two piece type with the rubber liner. If it slips it might affect the power steering or alternator or come apart while driving. The car is old so it may need replacing in the future anyway.

          Hi,

No, the balancer is one solid piece and in good shape. The harmonic gear is out, and I’m just waiting to receive the new gear along with the two FWD and AFT spacers from IPD to finish everything up. Have a great day!

I thought you were talking about the crank pulley. It's a rare day I've ever had a problem with the gear. Penetrating oil and hammering!/prying using a hardwood drift so you don't damage teeth would be my approach. Be careful using heat with the plastic rear timing cover in place.

If you're talking about the crankshaft gear the timing belt rides on, it's supposed to be a slip fit and if it's not coming off easily then there is probably some corrosion built up on the inside.

If so, use some penetrating oil. If that doesn't work, try some heat to loosen the corrosion. You might also try tapping lightly on the outside edge, not on the teeth, but avoid hitting the nub that aligns the crankshaft pulley as those are known for breaking.

I have never had to use a gear puller puller to remove the timing belt gear.

    Hi Habib,

Does your 240 have an electric fan in front of that crank pulley?
If so, maybe you can take it out and have room to use a gear puller on that pulley. (Harmonic balancer is the official name) If this is the case you should have room, and for good luck protect the radiator with a something so Murphy doesn't decide to punch an unwanted hole in it.

    Good luck, Bill

      Thank you, Bill.

The car is a 1985 Volvo 245 Wagon, and I don’t have an electric fan. The harmonic timing gear is extremely stubborn and refuses to come off. I may have to resort to drilling and tapping the face of the gear on the crankshaft and using a Harmonic Balancer Puller Kit. However, it’s going to be tedious due to the limited space.

      Thanks,
      Habib
