Racking it up 200 84

I'm about to install a new refurbished steering rack.

Any tips on this job?

Is it smart to change and flush the power steering fluid at this point? How do you flush the pump? Any suggestions on new fluid?

How do you bleed the system of air after the installation?

Thanks,

Steve Merelman

Re: Racking it up 200 84

Steve,

I've gotten very good results using Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF in my Bricks' power steering. It works especailly well during the winter ... seems to flow faster. Good stuff.

Re: Racking it up 200 84

Steve,

The rack sway is pretty straightforward, I remember a hassle with the universal joint, but thats about it. Make sure the new rack is centered before you install. Definitely change and flush the fluid. I just drained it a couple of times. Once all is installed, turn steering wheel back and forth, system is self bleeding. I found it will take several days to work all the air out, so keep an eye on the fluid level. I just used the recommended fluid. Good luck.

There's a good write up under the 700/900 FAQ section of this site that I was studying because I am getting ready to do this too. Bleeding sounds straightforward. Don't forget to make the front end alignment appointment...Good luck.
