sunroof weather striping...whats the deal? 200 84

Ok the top sunroof weather striping is falling off. Its like a fuzzy strip of something. I don't know what it actually does. But parts people want 50 bucks for the front seal and 20 for the rear seal of the sunroof. Which one am I trying to replace?

Thanks

Before you drop that kind of cash on an authentic weather seal, do a search of archived posts on this topic.

Somebody has named an exact product bought at Home Depot that replicates that seal vary well.

As for the rear seal (a "wiper"-like length of rubber glued to the top of the sunroof panel toward the rear of it), I went to Home Depot, bought a Frost-King brand storm door door sweep and pulled the vinyl out of the aluminum strip.

Its profile was identical to the original rubber wipe.

After cleaning up the roof surface with a wax/grease remover, I glued the vinyl wipe into place with GOOP, or similar. About $3.59

The front seal attaches to the roof oppening on the sides and front, roof does not have to be removed. rear seal glues to the back side of the sliding panel and the roof has to come out to replace .

Shop around to one of the suppliers that get volvo parts but aren't a dealer. The seal prevents the majority of the water from getting in but

what water does get in the drains are supposed to take care of. Make sure

to use compressed air for the cleaning. I use the black 3M weather strip

adhesive sets up fast, and I clean the area with solvent like alcohol

before glueing.

The front seal is usually the one that goes first and in my experience can be replaced without taking out the sunroof panel. You may want to do both if you are going to keep the car.

The only place I have found them is through Volvo, although maybe someone has found another source----they love charging for them.

When installing, be sure to get all the old adhesive off the mounting surface so the fit is good.

Re: sunroof weather striping...whats the deal? 200 84

Mine was rotten when i got the car, I removed it, and no problems since. I think that all it does is prevent wind noise somewhat, beacuse all it really is is felt or something fuzzy. I would like to get another one sometime though, beacuse the wind noise is worse without it.

PS: Clean those drain tubes out, mine were clogged (I live in the NW, lots of pine needles, crap gets in there) and when the water would collect (always raining here) and i stopped quickly it would pour down onto my shoulder. After cleaning out the drain tubes, it hasn't happened since.

So I could spend my 100 bucks elsewhere then? Who knew that fuzzy stuff is so expensive. Must be some special Swedish material found only in a small cave by the volvo factory. :)

Well, sooner or later you may with to get the seal, but I haven't had mine for about a year now, and it seems to be fine. I will probably get one someday when I get around to it. Basicially up to you.
