230E? 200 1988

can anyone tell me about the engine in my 1988 245 GLT, it is a 230E

also do this motor have scwish clearance, that is when the timing belt lets go does the pistons happily met the valves creating major distruction, yes I know I should change the belts but the guy I brought it off said he had it done recently, if the motor is of a self destructive nature I will change the belts

Re: 230E? 200 1989

I was curious about the piston/valve problem. Now I know. For $22 American and 2-3 hours I would play it safe. It's easy to slip an oldie off and a new one on before the crank and cam are misaliagned

My two cents

Re: 230E? 200 1988

You must be from outside the States. The B230E is a CIS fuel injection system with out CAT, commonly used in Europe before 1992 when stricter emission laws came into force. It is basically an upgrade from the B23E. All-in-all a very nice, robust, simple and reliable engine, less hassle than the B230F.

ALL B2XX series engines (EXCEPT the B200F high compression version) are of non-interference design (Pistons do not touch valves etc).

Check the belt for deteriouration every 6 months or so and keep a spare in the boot, you should be fine.

Reg,

PS. Renewing the belt on a B230 requires the removal of the crankshaft pully which on these engines is attached with a single large bolt. Removal can be done on the roadside but will require a bit more than a few spanners. Investigate the procedure to be prepared!
