I am a new brick owner and have no clue what the average gas mileage is for a 240 wagon. I know that Volvo"s are heavy but it seems like I'm going to the pump often.My wagon has 59,000.00 and is in mint condition.

I get 30 to 31 mpg (canadian gallon)running on 93 octane gas in my 84 245 with auto trans with combined driving.if i use low test gas i will only get about 27 mpg(amount of money per mile is about the same so run high test gas).the aut trans does eat into the gas mileage about 3 to 5 mpg from what i have been told.Some guys with the m46 trans have told me they are getting up to 37 mpg highway sitting on 100km/h.the trick is to run the highest octane you can find and to keep the speed down to legal limits if you want the gas mileage and to use the m46 trans.My 83 glt with m46 and b23e (a gring cam,2 1/4 inch exhaust system,adjustable cam pulley does better on gas than my wagon,easily getting 32 to 33 mpg combined driving.

I have an '88 245 with 173K on it and take the mileage with every tank. I am usually around 23 mpg and most of driving is highway. My low is 21.08 and my high is 25.50. Most tanks are between 22 and 24. I have owned the car for 2 years and have put about 50K miles on it.

I have an '89 245 with 163,000 kms. Under summer conditions it gets 32-33 mpg (CDN gal.) highway and 22-24 mpg city. This is about 26-27 USA mpg on the highway which seems similar to other posts. BTW, my car is usually pretty loaded with gear when on the highway. Also, the mileage has dropped 1-2 mpg since new.

Now that winter is here I get 16-20 mpg (CDN.)in city driving.

Also, regarding 240s being heavy. That may have been the case relative to other cars of their era but at just over 3,000 lbs. my 245 is 300 lbs. lighter than my MY2000 Subaru Legacy wagon, which is actually slightly smaller. BTW, the Subie gets better mileage even with its extra 300 lbs and 50 HP.

I get a steady 20 miles per gallon with the M47 5-speed and only short distance driving around town. Oh yeah, and a heavy foot doesn't help. I usually fill up once a week, and I only drive about 12,000 miles per year. I think the gas tank is 15.8 gallons, but from full down to the red is about 12 gallons in my car.

your mileage my not be that bad, you said you go to the pump often. from full to the red warning mark is only 11.5 gallons on my 240's. this my be far less than your used to on other cars.

These other guys are getting better mileage than I do. I'm lucky to see 25 mpg on the highway in my '87 245 with AW70. My '85 245 with M46 does a bit better, maybe 27 or so on the highway. Thirty? Never even been close! And around town, they both drop to the 21-22 mpg range.

I am convinced that some of this difference is due to the gasoline. As I said below, there have been three formula changes since I got my car. The stuff with the (MTBE? MBTE?) trick clean air additive gave everyone rotten mileage. The gas we have now is great. Or at least the best yet. Also I see a difference from brand to brand. Superstition? Maybe.

BTW the trick clean air additive got into the ground water, and does not break down. EPA mandated catastrophe.

25 city/30 hwy with 5 speed

24 city/27 hwy with automatic

That's my experience, and I'm speaking of the best possible. of course I only get that mileage when I drive normally. Usually I cruise at 80-90 and that cuts into mileage a lot.

Also, my gas gauge reads on the red when there are FIVE gallons left. I have no idea what the deal with that is, but I only get 300 miles from full to "empty", although it looks as if I could get more than that, considering that there is a lot of fuel left at that point.

Best mileage is in mild weather. To date a hair above 31. With the M47. Worst mileage £s just under 25, and happens at sub-zero (F) temperatures in snow storms. Funny how that happens.

The 31+ only started this last summer. The dealer told me 25 winter, 30 summer when I bought it.

I think that regional differences in gasoline formulation have a lot to do with it, as several formula changes here have made a difference.
