I want at least 200hp! 200 1979

I replaced the original b21 carb. engine, with an '82 b23, non-turbo, fuel injected engine. The b23 is much better but still not quick. I want to know if the b23 can be built up to 200hp, or should I pursue v8 conversion. I've checked into both Chevy and Ford conversions and prefer the Ford 5.0l HO, with 5sp conversion, as it seems by far the best as there is no forced metal situations. However, I'm still leaning to retaining all Volvo but I can't find information on what can be done to the Volvo engine to get the power I want. I've seen numerous articles on volvos that have been modified with turbo's, intercoolers, etc., but there is no details. Can anyone out there help me? Thanks Randy

Randy,

200hp with a n/a B23 is possible but it isn't cheap and it might never pass emmisions testing if that is an issue. You need to raise the compression ratio for starters. Better cam (K or H), some head work (port and polish, bigger valves, dual springs), headers, big diameter exhaust and a better intake system. Dual weber DCOE 45's or a programmable FI system. All this hp will also require a better ignition and forged pistons might be a smart idea. With all this you would want to modify the oil pump for higher pressure and add an oil cooler. As Caroll Shelby, of Cobra and Shelby Mustang fame once sail..."Speed cost money, how fast do you want to go?"

Check with Unitek in Sweden. Their web address is http://home.bip.net/unitek/. If you want to get 200HP out of your b23f, you'll probably need some parts from them. Also, check with http://www.jt-tuning.com/, http://www.kgtrimning.com/ and http://www.samsteffansson.se/samindex.html. I don't know what the maximum power you can get from your engine, but with higher compression, some head work, and a better camshaft it could be close. Adding a turbo to your engine would probably be more trouble than it's worth. Another option instead of the V8 is a late model B230FT engine, which can be modified to 300HP+, which would keep everything Volvo. See this site: http://www.mcbrooms.com/volvo/fast700.htm
