Will not go into reverse when hot! 900 93

My 940 turbo wagon will not go into reverse gear once the trasmisssion heats up. All other gears work fine. Reverse works only when I first start the car and then fails after about 15 minutes of driving. Any ides why?

will not go into reverse gear: do you mean that the shift lever cannot be moved to the R indent, or that once shifted to R, the car will not move?

Chuck--

How many miles on your car? The AW-7X transmission in that car is know for its durability. It's odd that your reverse fails after warm-up. All the experience I've had with problem AWs involved reverse slipping when the car (and ambient temp.) was cold. What does the fluid look/smell like: red and fresh or brown and burnt? Has it been changed per Volvo maint. requirements? You may want to begin the search for a reputable shop that knows AW transmissions (they were also used in some Toyotas).

Thanks for the comment. The vehicle has 128,000 mi. It is currently in the shop recommended by my volvo mechanic. The transmission is being replaced by the dealer that sold me the vehicle.

But if you find out, I'd like to know. Mine an 83 Turbo, goes into reverse with a bang, and then locks up. Feels like going up hill in a rollercoaster, I got a used unit I'm going to put in once it warms up some.

Mine has 244k plus on it.
