Vacuum Leak! Easy Check Method? 700 89ti

Hey guys,

I heard about spreaing carb cleaner on the hoses and if it buble then i have a leak. Is there any other way? Excatly how do i go about using te carb cleaner if i can do that? Any other brilliant bootleg inventions?

Several ways, one of which is carb cleaner. Be careful about flammability. You can also use propane sprayed around suspected leaks, or even (with the right equipment) a smoke generator, with smoke pumped into the intake under slight pressure.

you replied to eariler post about my car not running. Which hoses should i cover in carb cleaner, also in which way should i clean it up?

Gene, the carb cleaner idea works best around gaskets and fittings, not the rubber parts of the hoses. For hoses, just take a hard visual look for cracking, splits, tears, loose ends, etc. The big air intake corrugated hose can deteriorate in the corrugations, especially around the IAC intake, so feel around to see if there is a split. If you've got a turbo, pay close attention to any hoses/pipes from the AMM to the throttle body, especially around the clamps on the turbo. Run the engine at boost and have someone spray the cleaner around the clamps to detect any pressure loss outwards. Also, feel around the flame trap to make sure the hose fits snugly and doesn't allow vacuum loss; spray here too.

You might put a vacuum gauge on a throttle body vacuum fitting and test for actual vacuum and variations while the engine is running.

Steve,

the problem is, if you didnt read my eariler post, that it wont start so there is no way to test the pressure during boost. I installed a new fresh air turbo hose and the seals around the vacuum switch thingie(both of them) Maybe i messed up on the istallation. Is there any seal prep or should they go on dry, i cleaned all the contact points. Any suggestion? know ne good volvo people in georgia that could help me out?
