catalytic converter failure? source? 200 91

My mechanic seems to think that the catalytic converter in our 91 240 wagon with 193,000 miles is causing an obstruction. In the event that it must be replaced, where can I purchase one reasonably? Is this an item that can be replaced with a "generic" cat? The car is in the shop, so I'll probably have to act fast.

Thank you for any thoughts and suggestions you might have.

sincerely, Lon Herman

Re: catalytic converter failure? source? 200 91

If the converter is not broken up, there is no reason to suspect that. A bad converter on a '91 is not un common, but I doubt that that is your problem. Is the temp high? If not forget the converter. Most aftermarket converters cost about $160.00 at a muffler shop. The problem is that they are commonly welded in place. That can make certain repairs a pain in the ass. Have your mechanic remove your converter for inspection if necessary. You are better off with that one if it is ok. Any DTC's?
