744 Dash removal for blower motor replacement - D-I-Y job ??? 700 89

The blower motor in my just-purchased 89 744 needs replaced. Is this dash somewhere I don't want to go myself ??? I'm moderately mechanically inclined, but I've read of other dashes that people said they'd sooner eat cockroaches before removing them myself.

BTW, I've already read the excellent archives on the 740 heating system, and am probably going to try to match up the motor with a GM blower motor(22.95 at NAPA !!!). If anyone's swapped out on an '89, and knows for sure what aftermarket/non-0EM motors will definitely fit, that would be helpful as well.

Removing the glove box will also give you more room but it is not necessary. I have replaced the blower on my 85 740 twice. Went real easy the second time. Enjoy standing on your head though!!

Doug:

I just did a friend's 740 blower about two weeks ago. I went to NAPA, got the $22 motor and did it in less than two hours.

As I have done a few 240s, this did not even compare. A piece of cake!!

I am daring my niece's 740 blower to go out! But I know the next one will be my 86 240 wagon - that's just luck!

Doug:

Just as Chris wrote in the other response to your post, changing out the blower motor on a 740 is an easy job for a moderatly mechanically inclined individual. Mine took all of 30 minutes. Had I been consuming substantial quantities of hopped ambrosia before and during the repair it would have taken only 15. Chris' description of the procedure was right on the money. There is also an excellent description of the procedure in the 700\900 FAQ (see the bricboard home page for the link).

The blower is accessed from UNDER the dash, above the passenger's feet. You have to remove that fuzzy kick panel thing, the RH side kick panel, and unscrew the computer and swing it out of the way. You may have to pull the rubber door seal loose for a ways and remove a couple of the screws out of the plastic door sill. You can do the whole R&R in less than an hour if you're sober, or less than two hours if you drink beer along the way. It's much more accessible than the 240's.
