Putting on newer turbo 700 85

Well I will be putting on a T3 ball bearing turbo here in the next couple of weeks. Is there any helpful tips before I take it all apart. Things that I should replace while I am down there. My plans so far are to take the old exhaust manifold off with the turbo still attatched, or should I take the tubo off because it will be harder to take the turbo off of a loose manifold. Then port the exhaust manifold. Or at least get rid of the flashings that may be in there and clean it out. Put on the T3 ball bearing and get new vacuum lines. Is there anything I am missing. I have heard about cleaning out the oil lines. What is the best way for this. A friend that knows quite a bit about turbos will be helping me I hope. Thanks. Mike

With as much $$$ as you have going, get a NEW oil feed line. That way you are assured of clean oil entering the little beauty.

As long as you are removing the manifold, take the thing as a whole. Also consider a new oil sealing ring on the engine where the filter attatches.

Let us hear how the ball bearing beauty works. Have been curious.

Have fun, dick

Re: Putting on newer turbo 700 85

Since you are spending twice as much money for a ball bearing turbo, why not salvage a used 1990-1995 exhaust manifold and modify it to fit the Garrett? The 1990-1995 manifolds flow better, enough to add 10 hp at stock boost of 7 psi. Get the manifold/turbo support bracket from the later car also, because the early one does not fit the late manifold. Check carefully for warping across the runner flanges and for cracks where the runners come together in the back of the opening to the turbo.

Re: Putting on newer turbo 700 85

Actually I didnt spend alot of money. While everyone was bidding on that 1989 turbo and manifold on Ebay that went for $250.00 which is still a good deal I got a 1992 Skyline turbo for under 200. Skyline turbos are T3's with ceramic turbines and ball bearing. So I guess I didnt spen alot. I did want to get that T3/t4 ball bearing on Ebay but it has gotten to expensive. Thanks for yalls help. Mike
