Where and what is a PNP switch on my 960? And is this the same as a Neutral Switch? 900 1992

I have been tracking down a problem in starting my 960 and it comes down to the neutral switch on the shifter, the only way it will start is if I move the shifter all the way forward from its park position, then it will start, before that you get nothing but dash lights. We are thinking the neutral switch, yet someone has called out a PNP switch which is suppose to be in the tranny.

Are they the same and what is the best way to perform this operation?

Is there an adjustment I can do on the linkage to better activate this neutral switch?

I am thinking if I can adjust the linkage then I don't have to replace the switch........ what do you think?

Any other comments please forward.

Thanks

DDV

Same part and it's located on the right side of the transmission, not always easily replaced as the elements tend to corode that area, adding to the "fun". The front exhaust pipe must be lowered from the manifold first to replace the PNP switch.

The PNP switch is kind of like a neutral safety switch. The switch at the gear selector is for the interlock. You can't move the gear selector unless your brake pedal is depressed. I think the interlock and the PNP are wired together somehow. The PNP communicates to the ECM what gear you are in. It is located on the passenger side of the transmission, to access you have to disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold. Look for a wire bundle on that side. When my PNP was failing I noticed that the little click you hear and feel on the gear shift (in park) when pushing the brake pedal, if it wasn't there it wouldn't start. A click = a start, No click = no start.

I heard on the board some people had success with the car not running, move the gear shift back and forth 20 - 30 times might allow it to start. Hope this helps.

Rub in a hefty coat of hand lotion and you don't need to drop the exhaust.

I've done half a dozen or so of these on 960 and never dropped the exhaust.

I changed mine ('94 960 with 90K miles) without dropping the exhaust. However, I did have to disconnect the transmission cooler line to make room for the unit to slide off the spindle. Hardest problem was reaching the wire ties on top of the transmission to cut them to get the wires loose. The wires go from the switch on the right side of the transmission across the top of the trans to a connecter on the left side. Everything else was straight-forward.
