Disconnecting Odometer Cable 200 1983

I recently purchased my first Volvo without the electronic speedo. I need to remove the instrument cluster to replace a bulb or two and check the voltage regulator. I have spent about two days unsuccessfully trying to un-mate the odometer cable so I can pull the cluster out far enough to do the work. Is there some trick or magic word (other than the four-letter ones I've already tried) to unscrew this cable? Alternately, is there another way to get enough access to the pertinent parts of the cluster without removing this cable? Thanks much.

Re: Disconnecting Odometer Cable 200 1983

Jason --

If the cluster has never before been out, it might still have the plastic seal around the cable collar. If so, break off the plastic seal.

Give the collar a 1/4 turn and it should "unscrew," allowing you to pull the cable out. I sometimes need a helper (small pliers) to get a grip. It does require a very firm grasp to turn the collar.

Don,

I was feeling the plastic seal you mention. This just snaps off? I assume this causes no lasting harm. Thanks for your help.
