Cold Start Injector 700 ALL

Has anybody had a failing cold start injector? What were your symptoms? My wife's car is running rich for the first 45 seconds or so and I suspect a leaking cold start injector. No, it's not the ECT or the FPR: they are both new.

Heres something that makes you glad you drive a volvo.

not to long ago i had my turbo rebuilt a dvalve job and a new head gas replace fixed, after this was all done that car would not run right for the life of it i started to investigate only to find when i grabbed the central wire harness the car shut off bad move the car ran even worse at that point, so i replaced it good move the car somewhat ran good again but still didnt idle right or start right, investigated alittle futher, found the harness shorted out the computer, replaced that even better still not running right, so figured it took the iac motor with it replaced that running perfect when warm! come to find out that wire harness was attached to the CSV which i havent messed with yet, i just give it a dozen cranks in the morning and give it alittle gas and once it catches i hold it at about 1500-2000 rpms till i hear the ocmputer click then i drop it to 12-1400 rpms wait a few more min kick it in gear and hold the gas till she warms up good to go after that, ill get the CSV done eventually. NOW doesnt it make you feal good that your driving a car that when everythings out it still will run?

Re: Cold Start Injector 700 ALL

Steve, I had a bad CSI on an old 76 Audi 100LS (CIS FI). The injector pintle had sort of eroded away. When I removed it from the manifold (keeping fuel line attached), and stuck it in a glass jar, and cranked the starter, a copious stream of fuel shot out (no nice spray pattern). Replacing the cold start valve (cold start injector) cured the problem. Symptom was rich running/stalling for first 30 to 40 seconds after a cold start.

I had a problem in that my Cold start injector wouldn't shut off. Mine's an '82 244 so it's a whole different FI system but perhaps the CSI isn't so different between them. Maybe try starting the car with the CSI on and as soon as the car starts, unhook its wire harness. If it reacts to that and evens out, that may be it. That's what singled out mine. In the end I just clipped the harness and put it on a switch on the console.

    Hope this is of use,

    Will R.

That was my thought, too, but it is truly too cold here to do that: you risk cracking the plastic connector.

Whoops sorry just read your post again, it's two in the morning and I have a mental blindspot on acronyms

Re: Cold Start Injector 700 ALL

I just did a load of work on a 760 turbo. When it came to me it wasn't running at all but apparently the problem had started with it running excessively rich on startup. It turned out it had a leaking diaphragm in the fuel pressure relief valve. I had checked the fuel pressure and it seemed OK. Happened to disconnect the vacuum hose to the valve from the manifold and had fuel leaking out.

Lot easier to get at for a first check than the cold start valve.

    Regards

      Doesn't exist on turbo 700s 700 ALL

Especially being that turbo 700s don't have cold start injectors. Only non-turbo 700s.

Err, don't see what you're actually getting at but 760 turbos with the 230ET definitely have a cold start valve, cunningly hidden under the manifold.

        Che?

Don't tell that to my '90 745T, whose cold start injector is snugly tucked into the inner/underside of the intake.

        Especially.

    Hi.

Would'nt a leaking injector make the engine stumble, run rough?

Re: Cold Start Injector 700 ALL

Yeah, but I have this feeling that the injector is not shutting down correctly and may be spraying too much fuel into the manifold, just enough to raise the idle but not enough to cause stumbling. Sort of like a malfunctioning choke. We'll see: it's too cold to check it out right now. It will wait until it gets above freezing.

        I know...

I'm up near Montréal. I have an 82 240 waiting for me to strip it. Brrrr!!!

Could it be a thermal time switch???
