rear wheel stud replcement 200 1990

I need to replace the wheel studs on the back axle of my 90 245.

The Bentley repair book says to replace the caliper bolts, does everyone

do this? and also says a Special Volvo tool is needed to remove the

studs. Do everyone use one?

thanks

phil

Re: rear wheel stud replcement 200 1990

Just about every manual for every make of vehicle I've read suggests replacing the caliper bolts. And every dealership I've encountered never do unless the threads are bad or the bolts have been over-tightened. The reason for suggesting replacement is usually because the bolts are "micro-encapsulated" (i.e. they've got Loctite or a similar thread locking compound on them). Dab the threads with a couple of drops when you put them back in and all will be ok (provided they're sound of course) and use a torque wrench to tighten to spec.

Studs can be removed and replaced using a press, or even a decent bench vise and a suitable length of 5/8 ths inch dia (or larger) tube put behind the head of the stud, between the flange and the vise or press plate. Bashing 'em out with a hammer is not good.
