where theres smoke......

i wrote a couple days ago about a problem with my stereo(it goes very quiet the gets louder without warning) anyway i have put off trouble shooting it(lots of rain here, no garage) anyway the wife says she was driving yesterday and the stereo was working fine then it cut out again, anyway at the same time this happened she says there was popping sounds and lots of smoke comming from under the stearing collum.

so here's the questions

are there any stereo parts located under the dash near the stearing collum?

if not is there anything else that could cause these symptoms?

Re: where theres smoke......

/// Smoke indicates a non fused circuit. Another choice would be a switch.

Re: where theres smoke......

I know that on my 90 and 91 740's there was an amplifier for the original radio that was located on top of the steering column under the gauge cluster. Perhaps yours has (or had) one as well.

Re: where there's smoke......there's stear?

Gotta be asking what model is your RWD Volvo? Never, I repeat NEVER let the smoke out of your radio or the wires to the radio. It will be very difficult to find the exact smoke that escaped.

Seriously you have a short somewhere....but unless we know the model (guessing 740?) we ca't help much.
