Steering rack, how long will they last? 700 1988

Hey again everyone!

My 740 88 NA volvo has done near 200000k's....i have been having on going problems with clunking in the front end, and it *just* occured to me the other day that it could be something worn in the steering rack...... The clunking is basically equal on both sides, and when i think about it, it seems to come through the steering, if you get what i mean. If driven on semi rough (australian roads) how long should it last? Anyone know how much a rack is worth in australia? Can i replace it myself with some spanners and brains? Help please :o) I REALLY wanna get the front end clunking gone, it REALLY gives me the #@($'s......

Thanks in advance all, Have a good one :o)

They will develop a bit of slack in the spring loaded bushing that holds the rack against the pinion, which gives you a bit of a rattle through the steering column. Unfortunatly, the only way to buy the bushing and shims you need is to buy a complete overhaul kit, which is worth more than a rebuilt rack. On the plus side, it is only irritating- no danger of anything coming apart.

I presume you have checked bushings and mounting bolts and steering shaft joints et al.

I wouldn't just guess that it's your rack as they don't usually cause noises, just leak with age. My 700 has 200K miles and it's original rack too, never a problem.

With clunking, I'd look at other suspension parts like ball joints as it's most likely something else that you're hearing.
