Tow Bar 200 1984

Looks like I may be towing my 84 245 GLTi cross country behind an RV this Summer. Any experience out there with a good tow bar setup and how best to mount to the front end?

Thanks Robert

one of those two wheel u-haul rigs that goes under your front tires is your best bet.

/// Pay a visit to the experts, U-Haul for instance. Find out the limits on weight for towing the car you have. I designed a rig that required drilling a hole for a tractor three point hitch pin in each bumper mount arm. I tried to use the hitch pin threaded end to replace one bumper mounting bolt on the front of the Volvo. It wasn't worth the trouble. I now just rent.

Re: Tow Bar 200 1984

I'm sure you realize you must disconnect the driveshaft for any flat tow over ~20-25 miles............

I built several tow bar adapters for various Volvos. My 240 adapter attaches to the sway bar and has heavy chains that go around the front bumper. The grill and splash pan must be removed, and a blanket must be wrapped around the Volvo bodywork to protect it from the chains.

This was first designed for a '74, the first year for the "commando" aluminum bumper. I modified it to fit the 240.

I towed 4 or 5 cars using this rig, and probably averaged around 150 miles per tow. Never had a problem -- but I wouldn't use it cross country.

Rbt. Be very careful. Some cars will not flat tow. Once tried to tow an old Jaguar behind my '66 Ford van. Anything over 15 mph and the Jag tried to steer from the rear. It all depends on the caster angle. i rmn & etc.. Jim A.
