IIHS/Time Magazine 200 ALL

I've often heard people make reference to an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study circa 1993 when discussing the safety of the 200 series. Quite some time ago, it was mentioned that this study was printed in detail in Time(?) magazine the same year.

Does anyone know what month/issue this was printed in? I'd like to go my library and see if I can xerox it.

Does anyone have a copy of this article that they could post?

Thanks for any leads.

Re: IIHS/Time Magazine 200 ALL

According to the IIHS......

"The Institute has been conducting research since 1969 and, with some exceptions, provides free of charge single photocopies of a reasonable number of research reports. Reports published in scientific journals, conference proceedings, and compendiums are available as reprints (electronic copies may be available from the publishers), and their contents may not be republished without consent of the publishers. Othr reports are available as print or electronic (Microsoft Word 97) copies, and their contents may be republished with attribution. For further information about any of these publications, contact the Communications Department at 1005 N. Glebe Rd., Suite 800, Arlington, VA 22201, phone 703/247-1500, fax 703/247-1588."

Sounds to me that they're saying that if you asked them, they'd send you a copy of the report!

Please let us know how they respond!

(As to the 240 fatality rate of zero as reported by rhaire's Parade article, well, I know for a fact that driving a 240 will not make you live forever......although it might feel that way, especially when accelerating.....sorry, couldn't resist! )

Re: IIHS/Time Magazine 200 ALL

Parade Magazine, Nov. 27,1994 reprinted the study in digest form.

Highlights:

1988-92 model years, 184 models studied. Number of driver death's per 100,000 registered vehicles. Overall, vehicles averaged 11 deaths/100,000 from 1989-1993.

1) Volvo 240- 0. (yes zip, zed, nada)

2) Volvo 740/760- 1.85

(now for the POS's in ascending order of crappiness)

3) Voyager van- 2.23

4) Mercedes 190 3.06

5) Lexus LS 400 3.55

6) Caravan 3.79

7) Riviera 3.96

8) Aerostar 4.06

9) Jaguar XJ6 4.08

10) Acura Legend 4.12

11) Mazda MVP 4.13

12) Lincoln Town car 4.27

The rest of the models are only commented on in the Parade digest I have. Highest driver deaths in SUV's, small pickups and small cars. The worst rate in the study was Corvette at 36. Next time someone doubts you are driving the most durable, safest, best car ever made, roll out your stats. If they say, yes but Volvos are sooo slow, roll out the 244Ti and spool up at 3500 rpms..... Oh, wait, better not. This post is about safety.

Yes, just click on the envelope (please).

I tried to e-mail you directly by clicking on the envelope next to your name, but I got a bunch of garbage characters in my TO: field.
