NOT NEARLY ENOUGH! 700 1985

Don't stop on a piece of chewing gum stuck to the asphalt on a hot day. You might burn out the clutch trying to get loose.

Oddz-

You're looking at a naturally aspirated 8 valve/4 cylinder with a BLISTERING 114 hp. I don't remember the torque figure specifically...127 ft-lbs, maybe? As for quarter mile times and 0-60...yes, it can go a quarter mile and once it gets to 60 it'll stay there quite happily gradually working its way up towards 85 if you're not paying attention. (Seriously, I don't have figures for that but I've found that the manual tranny makes the relatively modest power output very tolerable.) And yes, it's RWD, which is why you're here in the wonderful RWD forum.

Your's is the 114HP version with 136 lb-ft torque. If you did have the 153HP, 16 valve version (available in '89&'90 only), it would look like this, and say "16V DOHC" on the cam cover:

1985 Fuel pump(s)? problem 700 1985

Help!

I'm trying to find the problem with my 1985 Volvo 740 GLE. 175,000 miles.

symtoms:

No fuel at fuel union near intake manifold.

Fuel pump relay clicks when key to "start". Did't check yet if it clicks when key to "on"

Main Pump running. Tank has about 2 gallons in it.

Can't hear pre-pump (in-tank)whirling.

Replaced fuel filter.

I'm about ready to pull pre-pump, but didn't yet, I hope to hear some good

suggestions! It looks like a pain in the a?? to pull it without blowing up the car. One thing I haven't figured out is that the repair book says to "pull off the electrical connector at the pump, and push the grommet into the space behind it". I don't see how it is pulled off. Is is just a plug or what?

Anyway thanks.

Re: addendum to1985 Fuel pump(s)? problem 700 1985

I think the problem was the pre-pump. I removed it but at the expense of the electrical connector. I think it would be wise to buy the sender/pump unit as a whole. any ideas where to buy cheaply?

Re: wow even my old 85 volvo 740 is RWD? 700 1985

Oddz-

I have a car that sounds identical to yours. Same year, same trim-line, same transmission, and same engine. The engine is a 114HP B230F, which is a 2.3L 4-cylinder with 8 valves. A few years after our cars were made, Volvo tried a new version of our engine called the B234F. This had basically the same block, but a new head with 16 valves instead of the 8 in ours. The result seems to have been much more power but more problems. I don't have any personal experience to go on, but I've read a lot on this board about reliability problems with the 16V head. I guess it was a good idea that didn't quite execute the way it should have. I've only ever heard of this engine being put on 740GLE models in around '90, (maybe '89), and perhaps later. So what we're stuck with is a really reliable car, (if you take care of it), that doesn't exactly fly and is hard to get more power out of.

Personally, I'm planning to do a few things like replace that fan clutch with an electric cooling fan and maybe install a new cam of some kind if I can find one that doesn't get me horsepower at the cost of the low-end torque which is the best part of the engine. Little things like that will squeeze out a few extra horsepower, but it's not going to be anything like a 160HP Turbo of the same era. Instead, I think that there's a lot to be done with the handling of this car. Swaybars, wider wheels, loweing springs, shoocks, and not to mention new bushings all around would make this very nice in the corners. I think that it would also make it a little safer, should I need the extra handling capability in an emergency situation. (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.)

Anyway, appreciate your car for what it is: a well engineered, very safe vehicle that has the potential to get you where you're going for a disgustingly long period of time.

Ignore that link about Nivomats, I didn't mean to put it there. (Sorry...I must have used it last time I posted.) You would only need to worry about those things if you had a 760.

Re: how much HP does a 1985 740 GLE (non turbo) wagon have? 700 1985

You're not going to find the 16 valve B234 on an 85 unless it's been swapped in for some reason. That wasn't introduced to the GLE until later. From what I hear, it sounds like I'd be posting a lot more to complain about it if I had one in mine. For curiosity's sake, anyone know what year they started putting those 16 valve engines in the GLE?

Re: how much HP does a 1985 740 GLE (non turbo) wagon have? 700 1985

89 is the year, and there would be no reason to coomplain about having it in your car either. All that was needed was to perform the routine maintenance on schedule and the engine is as reliable as in any other Volvo. Granted it won't be as forgiving if you try to stretch the timing belt replacement time, but really that isn't a good idea anyway. Despite comments to the contrary the 16 valve cars are not found in piles in the scrapyards any more than other volvos, just ask the people that own and enjoy them.

1989 and 1990 with either an M46 or AW72L transmission. I think there's a 16V wagon on ebay right now.
