Cheap cup holder for Volvo 700 1990

Hot Damn it works! I went to the salvage yard on my lunch break (the only one that admitted to having the coin cup holder). I found a 1993 Taurus with the coin and cup holder that was in great shape (only says coin/cup not the wordy version)yanked the thing out and badda bing it fits in the space below the non-factory radio on my volvo. The only modification I had to do to the coin/cup holder was dremel a tab off the bottom back of the coin/cup holder so I could just slide it in the empty slot (took about 3 seconds with the dremel). Let me know if you do this as well. The coin/cup holder cost me 25 bucks, a little on the pricey side, but I bet they can be found for as little as 10 bucks with some haggling - plus mine came with 3 crinkled one dollar bills in the coin tray. I like this set-up better than the 70 dollar armrest cup holder aftermarket jobber. This coin/cup holder is found in the 90's Ford Taurus and also the late 80's Saab 9000.

Excellent find. How snug does it fit? Don't wanna slam the breaks only to have my coffee spill on my lap.....

Re: Cheap cup holder for Volvo 700 1990

The cup holder is firmly seated in the slot and is not going to go anywhere. I will eventually sand off about 1/16th inch on either side of the face plate (left and right) so it fits flush with the dash.

Re: Cheap cup holder for Volvo 700 1990

It's good looking and comes from one of the "family" vehicles. I would be interested in what size cup(s) it holds and how much room is available to manipulate the shifter ie can you put the transmission in Park with a cup in the holder??

Re: Cheap cup holder for Volvo 700 1990

It fits standard size cups, but not the 44 oz gigantic soda tankers from Taco Bell (I think). The shifter is well below the bottom of the cup holder when open (there is a bottom retainer that pops out of the bottom of the cup holder when opened). I sanded of about 1/16th inch on both sides of the cup holder so it now sits flush with the dash trim. I will post more pictures monday.

Re: Cheap cup holder for Volvo 700 1990

I notice that your radio is in a different location than any 740 that I have owned, they've always been just below the climate controls. Where your cup holder is is where my radio is located. How did you manipulate that scheme? I like it!!

Re: Cheap cup holder for Volvo 700 1990

It's a different setup because it is a 760, not a 740. From 1988 on it has this centre console. You can't do this on a 740, the radio will "hit" the relays and things below. I know because I tried on my 780...

Re: Cheap cup holder for Volvo 700 1990

When I bought this Volvo the Radio was just below the climate controls. With the cup holder below the radio the cup holder would inhibit shifting if a cup was in it, so I just switched there placement. The radio was a little bit of a PITA to remove until I learned that there are little catches on the side of the deck that need to be held down with some type of flat metal object (used those little slot covers from a computer), then the unit just slides out- be carefull not to accidently disconnect any speaker wires while sliding the deck like I did. Good luck.
