rear end swap 200 78

Would it be easier to swap the entire diff from a 84 turbo 4-cly volvo

into my 78 Bertone when I do an engine swap, from the PVR V-6 to a 4-cly

turbo volvo motor? The Bertone now has an automatic transmission, and I plan to put a M-46 w/ O.D. in its place. I know there is a tag on the left side diff tube which would denote the axle ratio. I got the (2) piece differential marked for orinetation & center carrier mouting + the 4-speed

transmission mount. What do you think? Thanks to any one that can answer this. Jim

Here is a picture of what you should look for on the axle. Notice the upper left corner where it reads "3.73", which is the ratio.

Re: rear end swap 200 78

The '78 I have (and probably Jim's?) does not have a tag like you show.

However there was a metal tag on the front side of the housing which did.

I later swapped in an '86 diff because I wanted 3.31:1 gears instead of 3.73:1 gears and my axel bearings were starting to make noise (had about 280K miles on it). I didn't need the lower gearing with a V8.

Jim - it is a bolt-in if that interests you. However it wasn't clear to me why you wanted to swap diffs...

Sorry, (2) piece drive shaft. If I grabbed the code off the small tag on the left side of the differential from the 262 and the turbo parts car,

could you decifer the code?

Re: rear end swap 200 78

Mostly part number gibberish- but there should be a 3.XX number on the sticker. That be the ratio........

Re: rear end swap 200 78

It's not too much of a hassle to swap,it will fit, just heavy....but easier than a ring/pinion gear swap. What ratio is the 262C? (3.54?) The Turbo? (3.71?) You may want to weigh your driving styles vs. ratios.....before you swap.

Don't know what you mean by "2 piece differential"...

Re: rear end swap 200 78

Well, do you want quick high reving acceleration? Then the higher the number the better. For example a 3.91 to 1 means the driveshaft turns 3.91 revs for every one axle complete turn.

OTOH, if you want road miles, with possibly better MPG and less engine revs at 70mph you would go with a 3.54 to 1 (for example)
