Worn gear box axle 700 89

I finally took off the gearbox (5 speed) of my 740. Every time I pressed the clutch pedal there was a deep growl coming from the clutch area.

The main axle of the box looks very worn at the edge. Its even rusty. I think the bearing that is located at the center of the flying wheel has gone.

Do I have to change the whole gearbox and the bearing?

Why this happened (to me)???

I also observed that the main gearbox axle got a little bit of play.

Re: Worn gear box axle 700 89

Dunno. I had it happen in the M40 tranny on a 122 though, same way.

Didn't have to replace anything but the center bearing in the flywheel

and the bearing housing/snoot on the front of the tranny. (And the

clutch) The big bearing in the front of the tranny was still OK.

Happened in Panamá, BTW
