245 A/C compressor swap?? Possible? 200 82

I have an '82 245 with a B21, M46 manual trans, and 223,000 miles. The car has A/C that works and actually cools the car, but the monster York compressor growls and shakes like they all do. I have noticed that lots of later 240s in my favorite local salvage yard have nice, compact rotary style compressors. They have dual pulleys like my York, but the belt arrangement is different in that the later cars have the positions of the alternator and power steering pump reversed from the arrangement on my car. The later cars also have a different p/s pump than mine, which has a GM Saginaw pump driven by a belt from the A\C compressor, which is driven by a belt from the crank pulley. My question is: Can I swap my old York compressor for a modern compressor from a later 240? Will it cool as well as the York? Can I do the swap and keep my stock belt configuration? Has anyone done this before? Any info much appreciated!

Colin

Someone on eBay was just selling that bracket kit (new) starting at $75. No offers on first try. Don't know about the second. Didn't see it today, but wasn't looking, either.

I have done it. You can get a mounting bracket to use everything else in the standard positions. Will need a different drive belt length. I got my mounting bracket from Hancock Industries 800 289 8282. You also will need some different hose ends as both are straight in on the rotary compressors.

First, why dont you let your York die before replacing it?
