Elec Window clang!

Hey guys

I was in an accident, and bought another Volvo about 2 months ago. It is a great car! It is a 91 240. White with tan leather. An older wealthy couple owned it, and it is in mint condition with 80k! Well...on to my question....just last week, when i roll the window (electric) down I head a metal clang when it hits the bottom. When the window is open half way and I close the door, i hear that same metal clang. Is something loose? How does the panel come off?? Is it hard??

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Elec Window clang!

When I took my door panel off to fix a bad electric lock, I noticed that the lower nuts that hold the window assembly in were loose. Around the bolts that come through a slotted hole in the door were all scratced up from it shifting around, I bet that's your headache. My passenger side is starting to make that familiar sound, I should pop the panel off soon.

Re: Elec Window clang! 700 1988

My 88 740 does the exact same thing.... (electric windows) I've had a look, and am, well, completely baffled as to why it makes a "CLICK" or such metallic sound as it goes down......both front windows do it. From what i can tell, it may be coming from slighty worn bushes in the mechanism......(It is nothing to worry about though.......it only makes to sound, if you don't mind the sound....). It has a wierd mechanism to wind the window down, almost windscreen wiper motor like system....I suppose it is prone to going "CLICK" when the motor goes from "pushing" the windows down to "pulling" the windows down (if you look at the mechanism, you'll get what i mean)

Volvo in Australia has no idea, they just said to replace the whole system if it bugs me that much, but it was a BIG quote for such a stupid click!!!

I can almost gar-un-tee it is mangled bushings. Believe it or not, if you have a good parts guy he can get replacements for you. I replaced all of mine and life is good.

PS - It pays to take off the panel and see what you need before you go to the store. In my case I really only needed 1 bushing but I bought 6.

Re: Elec Window clang! 700 90

Similar concern with my 740. Intermittently metallic clang as drivers window is going down (not at the bottom). Curious! Then it stopped making the noise. I'll be watching to see what I should do.

Re: Elec Window clang! 700 90

My wife's 90 740 does that also at about mid window travel. The noise is amplified through the glass and almost sounds as though it's cracking the glass. Sometimes it does it ... sometimes not. It's been doing it for the 7+ years we've had the car. I didn't see anything obvious when I had the panel off, but then I didn't have enough time to really look around.

If anyone finds a cause and a cure, please post it.
