catalytic converter 700 89

I recently noticed an exhaust leak emmiting from the bracket which holds the catalytic converter to the front exhaust pipe. When I inspected the bracket, I found that it actually moved...rotated completed around. Is this normal? has the bracket rusted off the catalytic converter and exhaust pipe? Do I need to replace the catalytic converter and the exhaust pipe from engine?

Any solutions?

michael

Re: catalytic converter 700 89

No it's not normal.

The bracket from the cat and exhuast header pipe has round metal O ring (thick seal) inbetween. Your seal is worn or broken. Thats why you have play between the flanges.

Depending on if you can remove the existing flange bolts (lots of Pblaster), it would be simple to put in a new seal.

If you end up cutting the bolts, some models have a the cat flange with studs welded in. This would a nightmare, as you would have to drill holes where the studs are, in the cat flange, and put in a new bolt and nut. (AMHIK, ask me how I know).

Sounds like a job for Dr Acetylene. I firmly believe that familiarity with acetylene is one of those things that makes life much simpler. Take a course at your local Adult Ed program. Befriend a welder. Whatever it takes is probably worth it.
