/// When you say "hard to start," do you mean slow to turn over or long cranking to fire off.

Are you losing radio codes? When it is hard to start does any thing else not work, radio, wipers?

A defective battery cable is a likely suspect if either of those are true. The car may turn over without power to electronics. Start at the positive system wire and trace until the open connection or joint is located. The car must be acting up if it is the battery cable since once the connection closes the readings will all be good. You can place jumpers on the suspect battery cables and see if failures continue. (Negative cable works but could have a intermittent fault.)

If all lights flash when the car is running (alternator supplying power) look for a harness short around the alternator. Look at wires that touch metal and/or could be blown/vibrated and short to ground.

By hard starting I mean it takes a few seconds to start(whike cranking, not long slow low bat. crank)all else works except blower motor for heat/ac goes on and off , wife says "like when car warms up" >???? I already replaced blower motor recently. Maybe when she hits bump ground wire loose making this happen? Also OD lt comes on but od works. Thanks

Re: Hard starting, dash lts. 700 90

/// That would make it a fuel problem. One of two possibilities. Either the check valve is seeping allowing gas to run back to the tank or an injector is draining the fuel rail after you cut the engine off. The delay is the time required for the fuel pump to bring the pressure back into the operating range. I can't give you the full test set up for the 700. Generally this is what you are trying to do.

Pull the rail and all injectors, leave them connected and supply a ground, put each injector into a container you can see through, remove the high voltage, crank several times for a short period, look for injector drip.

You can also rig a remote switch for the fuel pump relay's switch contacts. I don't know the pin numbers for your car. (remove the relay and plug the custom wired switch into the correct relay socket connectors) While you must crank to get the injector signal from the electronics you are looking for a leaking injector and just the fuel pressure from the running pump should reveal the problem. If you do not short the fuel pump relay switch, remember that normally the fuel pump relay only runs for a few seconds before switching to the engine running signal from the electronics.

The check valve is in the main pump output fitting. If you have noticed other fuel related problems, difficulty climbing hills, dificulty on less than half a tank, there might be trouble with the strainer, or the short hose on the intank pump, allowing trash to get to the check valve. The main filter is after the check valve.

Re: Hard starting, dash lts. 700 90

Gee i think you have just solved a problem that has been bugging me for 2 years. intermittant hard start. i had my injectors serviced 6 months ago, no difference. When car is left standing for up to 20 mins, it normally starts within 1- 2 secs . After 20 mins, it may take 10 secs.

I have a 760gle v6 '89. Is the check valve part of the fuel pump/fuel filter carriage under the car?. How much does a check valve cost?

/// The check valve is in the output fiting of the main fuel pump and that is under the rear driverside pass seat, under the car. Look for junk in the valve since that would point to trouble with the pick up sock and intank hose in the fuel tank.

It is normal for the valve to just wear out then leak slowly. There may be no other problem.

If all the dash lights are coming on, suspect a charging problem-- battery on its last legs, or the alternator belt is loose/worn or the brushes/regulator in the alt are toast.

Have the battery load tested, check/replace the belt and do some measurements with a volt/ohm meter to see how your alternator is doing. Replacing the internal regulator/brush pack is a pretty easy task and should cost less than $70 if you do it yourself.

Should be a pretty easy fix. Good luck!
