Four-year-old Ruins Grills For Speakers 700 87

Recently my four year old punched holes in the grills of the speakers that are located in the back window. I have a 740 GLE. I'm told that volvo no longer has these grills available. Actually, the grills are in good shape, but the paper/filter needs to be replaced. I'd like to replace the grills before debris ruins the speakers. Do you guys have any ideas about what i can do? Thanks in advance for your suggestions/comments. I'm always amazed at the wealth of knowledge here. Jennifer

Could be going from the frying pan to the fire. One of our kids has been hell on the car:

      1. At two, broke a stick off in the driver's door lock

      2. At four, left very characteristic (so it wasn't one of his sisters!) bitemarks in the rear door upholstery.

      3. At eight, spilled 500 ml of root beer into the carpets.

      4. At nine, took out a tail-light with a hockey stick.

Then there is the two-foot scratch in the door that some kid did with a bicycle handlebar. Height matches little sister's bike, but she denies it.

She did take out the neighbours tail-light (BMW328) with her bike, I saw her do it.

And my wife said we were not going to let the kids trash this car!

Do you have the Volvo original grilles? These are the rectangular, flat plastic ones with one side angled up. If so, the fabric is an easy replacement; I did it to mine to replace sun-rotted fabric. If the plastic itself is broken, your best bet will be a wrecking yard, then replace the fabric.

The black speaker cover fabric sold at Radio Shack worked perfectly for my '86 740, and is not at all expensive, even though the package contains much more than is needed for this fix (of course, that means you have some on hand if/when it needs to be replaced again). I used a general-purpose contact cement; use it sparingly, since you don't want it to ooze out where you can see it when the grille is reinstalled. All told, took about an hour at an easy pace.

    Jennifer,

I recently had the factory rear speakers replaced (front too). I had the electronics store install them and noticed they had large rolls of the material you are talking about in the garage. I'd suggest going to your local equivalent and getting a couple pieces.

Jennifer, you have several options. An auto-recycler (junkyard) will probably have what you need reasonably priced and in good shape. You also could install some aftermarket speakers with new grills and have speakers that sound better than the Volvo factory ones. The second option may cost a little more, but the enhanced sound quality would be a side benefit from your dollars spent. Good luck to you....enjoy your day!!!
