HELP!? leaking vavlve cover gasket(s) 700 1990

1990 740 Turbo intercooler...got it with 90,000, a gem!

The valve cover gasket leaked after some 2000 miles, exhaust side, gasket turned out to be torn from previous owner's work (schmuck).

So I replaced it, problem occurred again, but my "go-to" mechanic pointed out a misalignment at front corner. So I replaced it again, only to have it fail, yet again, with no apparent problem evident. So had him replace it, as he is quite fluent in the B230's... and, yes, it has a happened YET! again (be calm Michael).

Anybody have any suggestions and or advice on what may be causing this problem that we can account for ...such as it may not be breathing properly??? Hhhmmm...Any reponse will be greatly appreciated! Mike

Re: HELP!? leaking vavlve cover gasket(s) 700 1990

Hey Mike,

Ultra Black RTV can be used to make a gasket that will conform to seemingly irregular surfaces. Get a new tube and follow the instructions for making a gasket, as opposed to using it as a gasket dressing. This is the stuff the rebuilders use. Good luck...

Re: HELP!? leaking vavlve cover gasket(s) 700 1990

Did you torque the cover right, and use some RTV sealent on the corners. I use the same sequence for tightening as the cylinder heads bolts. And you are using a OE quality gasket?

I recommend cleaning the oil seperator (see faqs). Any other oil leaks?

If that still fails:

You may have a nicked or damaged cylinder head mating face. Do you see any damage? There's a straight edge tool that can measure that. Bad PO perpahs.

Or you may have a crack in the valve cover gasket (very very rare), if everything else is ruled out.
