Can't Seem to Get Into Gear 700 1989

We have a 740 GLE sedan and it doesn't seem to go into 4th gear. It revs at about 4k rpms on the highway and definitely sounds like it isn't getting into gear. I'm hoping that we're not looking at a major transmission issue. All insights are helpful.

yup, its most likely the overdrive relay. i just had this problem. pull the relay out, and open it up. look at the soldering on the back and resolder the bad connection, it shouldn't be too hard to find. my arrow light was always on but now its off and the car shifts fine.

Sounds as if 4th gear (overdrive) not kicking in. Is over drive light going off on instrument cluster? If no then cause is not in transmission but in relay, wiring or switch. Often an easy fix by resoldering the overdrive relay.
