740 running very rich 700 90

I changed the oil on my '90 740 wagon today and noticed a very strong fuel smell from the used oil. Other than a somewhat rough idle, no other symptoms. The fuel-ignition system is the Regina-Bendix type. One other thing that may be related is the appearance inside the valve cover. It is very red in color, not light brown or golden as I usualy see on other cars. Have not tracked gas milage lately. Any ideas on the way rich condition?

Thanks in advance,

Blake

Re: 740 running very rich 700 90

not familiar with Rex/Regina, but if there's a fuel pressure regulator in the system they have been known to rupture/tear diaphragms and thus fuel is aspirated directly into induction system.

Take off vacuum line to FPR and there should be no fuel there....
