Why it do that? 200 1976

Hi- my question for today is about my 1976 264 GL. The otherday I was trying to get it running and the fuel pump wasn't running. I tried smacking it a couple times as that felt good and made me think that I was doing something worth while. The next step was tpo check the fuel pump relays and that led me to changing them both as one of them rattled and the other for good measure. Now when I try to start it when the key when gets to the on position it starts to crank and it starts and then when I turn the key off it continue to crank and I can only stop it by taking the terminal off of the battery. This was just over night that this new problem started. Why it do that? How would I fix it? I already tried wacking it as this used to fix my Subaru, no fix. I switched out the electrical part of the ignition switch out with a known working one and no dice? Thanx in advane for thinking of a fix for me. Later-GW

Your replacement fuel and system relays are probably the wrong ones. Not all 5-leg relays are the same. Make sure they are the right part numbers.

A good one could be the wiring harness on the engine. I just had mine fixed. My car would run with the key out and the doors locked. wiggle the harness and the beast would quit.

    Could work for you ?

/// At some point the solonoid tab and its wire is touching the starter bolt or the ignition switch is bad.

I had a problem in my 79 that during a heavy rain it would try to start with no one in or near the car, no key. Rain was shorting the solonoid to the starter cable because the cable end had turned while I tightened it and they were almost touching.

Another choice is that the starter armature is bent and is locking the starter clutch in the flywheel. There are other parts inside the starter that would, if bent, broken, worn out, keep the starter engaged. If this were the case the starter would stop when the engine stops. (cut off air)
