Transmission output shaft bushing 900 95

I've read the FAQs and came across this automatic transmission output shaft bushing that needs to be replaced. I've also read that there is a similar bush at the back somewhere at the joint of the drive shaft and the axle. Can anyone show me, perhaps in a simple diagram, where exactly are these bushes placed? If not, please describe exactly where there are and how I can identify them?

I would like very much to know the purpose of these bushes and if they are faulty what will be the symptoms or problems. I'm not good with cars but after reading the FAQs I suspect these parts may be faulty in my car. I do hear some clinging or knocking sound (perhaps due to free play) at the back when the automatic transmission change shift, but this does not happen all the time.

My mechanic gives me all kind of reason but did not solve the problem. Instead he told me it is safe to go on and wait until the problem becomes serious because then only he would know what causes it.

If these bushes are the trouble makers, and if replacing them is not too difficult or messy, I like to do it myself.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Transmission output shaft bushing 900 95

Your 95 model has a roller bearing instead of the earlier bushing. That started in 93 or 94 on the AW71 gearboxes. You can tell by looking at the output falnge where driveshaft attaches. The bushing style has not got a bell shaped slinger/protector for seal, the bearing type has this type flange. The slinger/protector prevents you from seeing the seal. The std flange on bushing versions allows you to see seal on tailhousing.

The bearing can't be used in place of the bushing as it requires a different output shaft in rear of trans. $$$$$$$

    Re: Dude!!! >ENJOY< your car! 900 95

Buddy, you worry a lot. Most likely your noise is from a rubber bushing in the rear suspension, of which there are a dozen or so. The Transmission output bushing and the Rear differential input bushing are fairly difficult to change and require specialized tools. I've not seen many go bad.

Another possibility is the center carrier bearing for the Driveshaft. Now THAT I could believe. Not a difficult task to change it either.

Now. It shows that you are very excited about your car. And rightfully so. That is a sweet ride. It is also fairly bulletproof too. A little preventative maintenance is all you need to concern yourself with now.

Dump the engine and transmission oil and replace with quality synthetic. Flush the coolant. Clean it up. Check the brake pad thickness. Crawl under it and have a good look around. Maybe a tune up too. Look for nails in the tires, that kind of stuff.

But then go DRIVE the thing. Thats going to be WAY more fun than sitting around wondering about what might break. When something does break, post it here. We'll help you get it fixed.

    Take Care!
