High idle at stop 200 1982

When i stop at a light or something the car idles at about 1500 or higher but then eventually will drop (after a descent time period), this does not happen all the time just often enough to bother me. Any ideas?

    Chris -

Ryan's points are good. Do you have a manual? Either a Haynes or, better yet, a Bentley can be quite valuable. Look for them on eBay.

The IAC is the device that allows some air into the engine when the throttle is closed. It has a wiring harness hooked on the front end and the other end has two large vacuum hoses kind of across it. One hose to the air inlet to the throttle body and one after the throttle body.

The mechanical part of the IAC gets glopped up over time, but it can be cleaned. When the car is idling fast, try this: Put a long bar, like the long 1/2-inch drive socket extension, on the hose end of the IAC and give the other end of the bar a few light taps with a hammer. If the idle drops, you've loosened the glop. If not, then use a pair of pliers to close off one of the hoses - slowly. If the idle drops, the IAC may not be getting the electrical signal it wants, or else it's too glopped up for the hammer to loosen it up.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

    Hi Chris-

Sounds like a bad Idle Air Control Valve. Hope this helps.

      Hey Ryan-

Thanks a lot, where is the Idle Air Control Valve located. Thanks

        Chris-

It is located behind the distributor. It looks like a small can-shaped object with two hoses going out of it. If it turns out to be defective, make sure you replace it by looking at the part number located on the air control valve itself. Also make sure your throttle body is clean.

            Chris --

If your '82 has the K-jet injection, your CIS motor (also known as the Idle Air Valve) sits atop the valve cover, between cylinders 2 & 3. It's just about the most accessible part on the engine.

The CIS motor (IAV) is mounted under the intake manifold on LH-equipped engines.

You can wash through the valve end of it using carb cleaner. This will dissolve varnish 'n crud, which often gums up the valve.

Also -- be sure your idle switch is working and is adjusted. It is this switch that tells the idle control system to take control at idle. If the switch is misadjusted, the idle speed won't be controlled when the throttle closes.
