Another Idle Problem 200 1985

Ok Volvo Lovers,

Here are the problems, the temperature hand usually sits at 9 o'clock. At start up it will go up to 9 when sitting still as I move along it drops to 8 o'clock. I have replaced the temperature sensor and the thermostat. Still have the problem. Now the idle goes up to 1200 rpms and I can't get it to come down except if I use the AC. Last night it started to idle at 700 to 800 rpms but it started to shake very badly. This morning as I drove to work it went back to 1200. I have replaced the idle control motor with a new on from Volvo. I cleaned the throttle body and put on a new gasket. I, also, put on a new manifold gasket, replaced two fuel injectors. Can someone tell me what is going on with this car?

Thank you,

Theodore

/// What color is the inside of the tailpipe? Black with soot or grey, normal. Why did you replace the injectors and only two? If the tail pipe is black with soot pull the plugs and note which are also black. Repost.

The temp gauge may be reacting normally. The drop from nine to eight may be the thermostat opening. It would rise at idle and drop once under way.

Re: Another Idle Problem 200 1985

On Saturday, I decided to go to a junkyard to look around. Finally after a year of looking I found a left rear taillight that is in good shape, however, the right one was gone. For another $50.00 I will keep looking for that right one. While there I thought I would pull the in dash temperature gauge since I had replaced the other two components just to give it a try. I got home installed the light assembly and the used temperature gauge. This may sound strange but when I started it up after changing the temperature gauge the idle went directly to 700-750 rpm. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but it worked for me. I drove it Saturday about 80 miles and the temperature hand stayed at 9:00. By the way, the tail pipe was gray when I made the post to the board. This gauge seemed to have solved my problem. I am happy I like reading this board. I have learned a lot about my Volvos (85 240 DL, 92 940 GL). My Volvo dealer hates this board. I can see why, I have become less dependant on them. More money in my pocket and a great running car. Thank you all for the fine posts. Keep 'em coming.
