AC Belt Squeal 200 1992

I just did my timing belt and now the new ac belt is squealing. Does anyone have advice on how to tighten it up to eliminate the squeal?

    Tom -

The newest I have is a 1988 with B230F, so there may have been changes on your model. The split pulley system was used on the B23 and older engines, and it some respects were easier than the B230 such and you and I have. Squealing belts are often due to being just a little too loose. Check the tension. Lay a straightedge across the a/c and crank pulleys, then use a yardstick to push the belt down half between the pulleys. It should show about 1/2-inch. More is too loose, less is too tight which can damage the a/c clutch bearing. Also try a little belt dressing spray on stuff.

BTW - is the squeal constant, vary with a/c compressor on or off? other symptoms?

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      BC:

Yes, I have the B230F engine and the ac belt seems only to squeal for a second intermittently as the compressor activates on. It also will squeal slightly when accelerating from a stop light. The belt does not squeal when the ac is turned off. What's all this split pulley and interchangeable washer stuff?

(scratching my head, wishing the Bentley book had more info on adjusting belts)

/// If you have the split pulley at the crankshaft there will be four bolts and two studs in the center of the pulley. The pulley is adjusted by exchanging washers into and out of the pulley center.

Use a wrench to turn the studs to the 3 and 9 o'lock positions. Remove one washer from the center and reassemble the pulley with that washer on the outside stack. Put both nuts on the studs and tighten the stud at the 3 o'clock position, snug slightly on the 9 o'clock stud. Use the wrench to turn the crank until the studs reverse position then tighten the stud NOW in the 3 o'clock position. Repeat that move to verify that the studs are tight and that the belt has mounted into the correct pulley position. Test the belt and if you are satisfied with the tension, put in the remaining four bolts, tighten all.
