Help! with wheel stud removal 700 92

My local tire store just mangled the threads on the rear of my '92 740 wagon. I bought the replacement stud. After removing the rotor do I just smack the stud or is there a better way? A little heat around it with a pencil torch? Quick response sure helps. Thanks Bob Walter

    Hey Bob!

Yep, just smack that sucker out with a good sized hammer or sledge. You don't care about the threads now since it's mangled anyway.

Then, make sure there's no rust or corrosion built up in the bore on the axle (where the new stud is to go). Simply wire wheel it to clean.

To put the new stud in, simply grease up the knurled collar on the new wheel stud, and push it in from the back. You might have to turn the axle a bit to jimmy it in there, but once it's seated nicely at the opening, put a bunch of washers on the threaded part of the stud, and put a lug nut on with a bit of oil between the last washer and the lug, and tighten away. It should pull right in!

I've done this on my Volvo, and on several other cars, with very good results.

You really should have the bozos at the tire shop do this, since it was their screw up in the first place...

I never had to change one of those, but can't they just be drawn in by tightening a nut on the inserted stud? Maybe need some washers to space it out if you run out of threads before it seats up.
