Stereo and Wiring 200 1985

I have a 1985 240 dl. I am planning on buying a new radio and all new speakers. Problem is wiring for the rear speakers. The radio is mounted in the upper location and has the antenna on the front left pillar for the roof. The antenna wire for the power antenna is ran along the left side all the way to the trunk but not in use. I wanted to try and use this to pull the speaker wires through to the back. But, it seems that this antenna wire is rather tightly pack into where ever its rounted. Hence, how do you remove the black plastic covers that hold the carpet down in the doors. (not on the door, but on the car in the "door hole") Also, anyone with experience know which side is better to the wires on, passneger or drIver? I'm just going to run the wires this way. Another question: I have the analog tuning am/fm/cassete and want to use the power wires for the radio but not the speaker wires (going to run all new, even to doors). Which color wire(s) are the power wires? Yeah and one last thing. How do you get the speakers out of the doors? Do you have to remove the whole interior door panel? Thanks much.

Re: Stereo and Wiring 200 1985

I forgot I wrote this down for someone earlier. KEEP IN MIND THIS IS WIRING FOR AN '89. So check out a few wires before digging in.From the radio:

The connector in the radio is a AMP #480673

Pin 1 Const. Voltage +12 (Fuse 8) For clock and memory

Pin 2 +12 v switched (Fuse 1) works off the ignition switch

Pin 3 Power antenna My 200 does not have a power antenna

Pin 4 Left Speaker +

Pin 5 Right Speaker +

Pin 6 Right Speaker –

Pin 7 Left Speaker –

Pin 8

Pin 9 Ground

Wires under the dashboard:

Green wire……………Constant on (+12V)

Yellow/blue………….. +12 v switched

Red…………………... Antenna

White (Gray)………… Left Speaker +

Yellow/Gray…………. Right Speaker +

If I remember correctly green is the constant and red is the ACC power I'm taking my head out tomorrow so I will definatley have the amswer then. But I am 95% sure. Roll on...

Re: Stereo and Wiring 200 1985

The black plastic trim covers at the edge of the carpet just pop off. Grab one end and pull upward. The radio power wires should be red and blue, (2) and ground is black. Use a test light to be sure. As I recall, one should be hot all the time, and 1 hot with key on. To remove speakers, just grab the grill and pop it off. It snaps to the speaker, then 4 screws and the speaker is out, providing they are original. As for which side to run rear speaker wires, I usually use the drivers side as the radio harness is on that side, but that's just personal preference.

Re: Stereo and Wiring 200 1985

AS Bob said, the speaker grill comes off by pulling from the bottom or top. maybe a bit of a prying with a wide bladed screw driver fron the middle of the top or bottom, that's where they snap onto the speaker. then 4 screws.

I will try to remember to check my book for '85 wiring I don't know if it's the same as my '89.

Black covering...Yes pull from the front of it OR the back to get it started then it will peel up easily. Careful those little clippies are sharp!

I ran rear speaker wires over the stearing column, inside the side panel plastic, under the black covering and up the side of the rear seat. It worked out nice and clean.
