Beck Arnley "Fail Safe" Thermostat ? 200 1988

What hell is a "Fail Safe" Thermostat, Beck Arnley brand sold at NAPA ?

My mechanic didn't know. The counter guy at NAPA acted like he had never heard of one before.

They are listed on NAPA's website.

Stant, maybe playing CYA, claims that no one can guarantee a thermostat as "fail-safe" and thus they don't exist. But yeah, theoretically it means that if it fails it fails open.

The Lazarus syndrome 200 1988

Or so it has aptly been called by one among us.

Although it is sometimes the case that someone resurrects an old thread after doing a search.

But this does not sound like one of those times.

Goes bad in open position. Engine doesn't overheat.

Volvo stats work the same way.

Your temp guage will stay way cool, as though the engine isn't warming to normal operating temperature.

In dead of winter, heat to cabin will be lots less.

Re: Beck Arnley "Fail Safe" Thermostat ? 200 1988

I beg to differ on the Volvo thermostats. I have had one fail just barely open. Couldn't drive over 50 mph and keep the temperature out of the red. It was an uncomfartable trip home with outside temperatures about 95 degrees F with the heater on.
