SRS Air Bag Light On 200 1990

Hey Brickdrivers,

I have a '90 240 that has a driver's side air bag. Last weekend I removed the instrument cluster to change a gauge. Using my Haynes manual as my guide, I disconnected the ground cable to the battery and the orange plug to the SRS sensor under the driver's side carpet before working around the area of the steering column. After replacing the cluster but before reconnecting the SRS wiring, I test drove the car to see if everything in the cluster was not working correctly. The SRS light stayed on after starting the car as I expected because the cable was not hooked up.

Since then I disconneted the battery cable and then reconnected the orange cable of the SRS and finally reconnected the battery cable again. So now the SRS is hooked up properly but the SRS light on the instrument cluster stays on after starting the car. There does not seem to be a problem with the plug on the SRS cable so I'm wondering if there is a reset for the SRS light. Does anyone know if the SRS has a diagnosic system that stores trouble codes like the FI system's? And if it does, is it possible for me to reset the diagnostics?

Thanks in Advance

Rustin

Re: SRS Air Bag Light On 200 1990

pardon me if i ask a question that is in vein as rustin"s question only this variation....my son rearended an ford expedition....specifically the factory trailer hitch which set the airbag off. i've repaired the "damaged bumper and related parts" now as i put the 'bag back into service" do i have to anticipate SRS dash lite "problems"? anyone

have "been-there-done-that story / experience to share?

Re: SRS Air Bag Light On 200 1990

The SRS test point is under a plastic cover in your center console, where the hazard switch and rear def switch are. The cover has SRS stamped into it. Pry off this cover. Under is an electrical conector. Hashion a grounding wire about 10" long with a small spade terminal on both ends. Plug one end in to the test socket, turn on the key, and wait 10 seconds for the SRS to complete it's self test. Now, ground the other end of your ground wire to the outside grounding ring of the cig lighter socket(NOT THE CENTER INSIDE!) for 3-5 seconds and release. The SRS light should go off, then flash from 1 to 10 times, this is your fault code. After flashing, it will come back on steady. To reset, wait a few seconds and then ground it again three times within 5 seconds, the light should go off, back on for a second, then off again if no fault is present.

Re: SRS Air Bag Light On 200 1990

Thanks Bob, Your directions were great. I did have to repeat the reset attempt several times before I got light to flash and then go out. It was a lot easier to do than trying to reach under the carpet and connect the SRS plug.
