Replace steering rack: straightforward? 200 1984

I need to replace my steering rack with a used one off another 84' 242 that I am junking due to dead body. I have not done any front end work but have done most everything else outside of dropping engine or tranny. Is this fairly straightforward? Do I need any special tools? Any advice for the first time doing this? Thanks ahead of time!

just happened to replace the rack in my '83 last weekend with a remanufactured unit just this past weekend. it was straight forward and

pretty simple as for special tools really just a tie-rod end seperator, thats about it except for a couple of wrenches and a few sockets.

the whole job took me about 3 hours, but i do have a compressor and air tools

No special tools required. You probably will want to get new crush rings (seals) for the two PS fluid hoses that connect to the rack. The best advice is to jack the front end up high enough to give yourself space to work under it and get jack stands under it. The most frustating part of the whole thing that I remember is that the steering shaft u-joint only fits onto the spline on the rack in ONE way. The rack shaft will have one or two "teeth" missing from the spline and the u-joint will have the same. These two have to fit up perfectly, flat spot to flat spot. You will have to fit this u-joint and shaft together before you can bolt up the rack, so you're having to do this alignment while supporting the full weight of the rack, so give yourself room to work under the car. If you're unsure of mileage or have over 100k miles, I'd second the recommendation to replace tie rod ends and ball joints, since you'll need an alignment anyway. Make sure you follow the directions that come with the replacement rack for flushing and priming properly. Good luck!

    Gary -

The job does look straightforward, another brickster will have experience. What I do know, however, is that the job requires open up a hydraulic system, and that means cleanliness is a must. AND, look where the rack is! Down there in the dirt. Can you get it steam cleaned? You'll have to remove the gravel shield anyway.

BTW, you will have to remove tie rod ends so consider replacing them, and maybe ball joints and boots for sure while you're "In there".

    Good Luck,

    Bob
